Captain Chandler's Lament

At the end of North Main Street on Chincoteague Island you'll find the solitary grave site of Captain Joshua Chandler.  The Captain was killed in a freak, late fall thudnerstorm while working Chincoteague Bay for clams and oysters.  Lightening dismasted the schooner.  It's unclear whether the falling mast struck him, or the lighting hit him directly.  His two sons were with him at the time.  They polled the boat across the Bay and carried their father home.  Captain Chandler's is the only grave in this cemetary.  The grave is frequently visited by tourists.  Depending upon their traditions, many leave coins, shells or stones on the grave stone.
