The Mazurka
The mazurka is a lively Polish folk dance in 3/4 or 3/8 time with the accent on the second beat of each measure. Although they share the same time signature, the placement of the accent gives the mazurka and entirely different feel from a waltz.
Mazurkas are traditional performed by couples arranged in a circle. The traditional dance is upbeat with lots of foot stomping and heel clicking.
The national anthem of Poland is a mazurka. Native son Frederic Chopin brought the dance to fame during the 19th century while he was composing in France. During his lifetime Chopin composed more than fifty mazurkas for piano.
