Creating Celtic Sets

This course is for intermediate players of instrumental Celtic music who wish to create their own sets of tunes.   The class has three goals:  1) to understand the guidelines for constructing a successful Celtic set, 2) to expand tune repertoire and 3) to examine successful sets of tunes.

The dual purpose of set design is to engage listeners with interesting music and, then, surprise them by changing the mood.  Techniques to achieve these goals will be explored in detail during the course.  Reels and jigs from Ireland, Scotland and Wales will be used during the class.  Each day a new three-tune set will be examined in detail.

Given the limited time available during class, students should anticipate introductions to the tunes.  Mastery of the fifteen tune repertoire presented in class will come only after practice following the course.  The class will be supported by a website that will include recordings of each set and downloadable transcriptions of the melodies and chords in both standard notation and ABC notation.   The class will not provide instruction on playing techniques for individual instruments.  This class is a not a Celtic session.  Intermediate players.  All instruments..
