A planxty is an Irish melody written in triple meter (3|4 or 6|8).  It's tempo is slower than the jig. But the pulse is lively.

Planxtyes were originally written for the harp.

The word "planxty"  may be a corruption of the Irish toast "sláinte", meaning "good health." Planxty may also have been derived from the Latin word planctus, a medieval lament.
