Brendan Breathnach
1912 – 1985
Brendan Breathnach was assigned by Ireland’s Dept. of Education to travel throughout Ireland to meet musicians and write down their versions of traditional Irish music.

Five of Brendan Breathnach’s collections were  published between 1983 and 1999.  Only about 1,300 of the 7,000 tunes he collected have been published.   The entire  Breathnach collection is in the hands of An Gum, the Irish state company responsible for the publication of Irish literature, especially educational materials. These Breathnach collections are highly regarded among musicians and many tunes and manuscripts are available on line through the Irish Traditional Music Archive.
